FNB Whiskey fest review

Yes, it flowed

Here at the fishfinger headquarters we have an unwritten but unanimously accepted rule of thumb: when we go, we go hard (and drink like fish while we’re at it)! So when we heard about the FNB Whisky Festival we were overcome with tears of joy. Off we went last night, indulging in the finest whiskies from near and far, mostly those which our previously disadvantaged selves cannot afford; the likes of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Chivas Regal and some or other Jack Daniels. More after the jump

The connoisseurs spoke...A LOT; we were given a history lesson at every whisky stand we were remotely interested in (which was every stand!) so the whiskies served as rewards for the good kids, the kids who listened to the old Scots with the funny accents. Thankfully the event wasn’t exclusive to any one kind of person; everyone was accommodated, beginners like myself and old dogs. For the first time I was taught to smell my alcohol before i chugg it, so the aroma "...entices and primes your palatte..." Hell, I just drink, forget the "...smoky notes and fruity undertones", the "toffee and caramel tastes and the beautiful amber of the whisky...".

Good times were had by all!

The food deserves mention here; firstly, the black was almost shocked out of us by Woolies prices at a PicknPay stand. The PnP food mart is infamous for feeding their customers with sloppy, oil-drenched food but last night proved different; they shut us up with some delicious gourmet-looking lasagne and prego rolls which were given praise by the carnivores i was with. You know food is good if they give it the thumbs up. Kudos to PicknPay for getting it spot on last night, hope they don’t lose sight and resort to their old, cheap ways!
Old PicknPay...

New PicknPay

Tonight’s the very last evening of the festival so if you want to get hyped up before a serious night out the Sandton Convention Centre is the place to jolt the night’s proceedings. Tickets retail at Whisky live festival and at the door. The Three Ships stand will be graced by Oskido tonight. He’s the old man who’s convinced himself he was born with a microphone in his hand, the man who’s spun vinyls for as long as i care to remember. So if you’re remotely interested and like your alcohol cheap, the Three Ships stand is the place to be!

If, like myself you don’t know your whisky from your brandy, fear not for the Liquid Chefs will be there mixing a range of delectable whisky based cocktails. You need to bring cash though, no swiping there (stupid really).

All in all, a splendid night it was; good booze, good people, good ambiance. The only accessory that was missing was a good cigar!
It came, we saw, it conquered!!
