As South Africa draws closer to its local elections the heat is on. Variosu parties are employing different tactis to appeal to a wider audience and have a broader reach. Turns out our President Jacob Zuma has resorted to tweeting.More after the jump:
President Jacob Zuma began tweeting on Tuesday gathering over 600 followers within an hour of his first post.
"Democracy is flourishing in South Africa, thanks to the active participation of all citizens. It's wonderful. Vote 18 May!" read his first tweet, posted from an iPhone, from the account SAPresident.
His spokesman Zizi Kodwa said: "Yes, it is the legitimate account for President Zuma.
"[He] decided to join the world of Twitter to better communicate his activities and reach a wider audience both young and old, domestic and abroad."
The account was in his capacity as president of the country, said an aide Zanele Mngadi, who laughed when asked if someone had to teach the sexagenarian how to navigate the 140-character micro-blogging tool.
Mngadi said the intention was to communicate brief excerpts of speeches or highlight something, as the presidency was already doing on Facebook and so, not every update would come directly from the president.
"But, naturally, if he gets time at some point, he will do it." she said.
Zuma follows one account on Twitter, that of the presidency, at PresidencyZA.
Jacob Zuma's Avatar on twitter |
It posted on Tuesday morning: "We would like to announce the creation of a Twitter account for President Zuma. Please follow the President on @SAPresident".
The ANC, which Zuma heads, also has a Twitter account, MyANC.
He joins other South African politicians like the DA's Helen Zille (helenzille) and Cape Town mayoral candidate Patricia de Lille (PatriciaDeLille) and further afield United States president Barack Obama (BarackObama) who have also made Twitter a part of their communication strategy.
I highly doubt that this is our honourable President Jacob Zuma tweeting, firstly I don't belive that Jay-Z has an iPhone and you'll probably find that its someone who's been hired to tweet on behalf of the President, the President is too busy trying to campaign to be tweeting let alone learn how to tweet. South Africans and tweeps need to stop being so gullible. Palease!
