Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute 2010 Conference


The Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) http://www.unisa.ac.za/thabombekileadershipinstitute will host an international conference from 11 to 13 October 2010 at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.  The Conference will be preceded by the launch of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation  on Sunday, 10 October 2010, also at the Sandton Convention Centre.

TMALI is a public service and not-for-profit institution dedicated to investing in new thought leaders for Africa’s renewal. TMALI is a partnership between the University of South Africa (Unisa) http://www.unisa.ac.za  and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.

The Purpose of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation is a not–for-profit organisation established in 2008 upon Mr Mbeki’s retirement as the President of the Republic of South Africa (1999-2008), to support his continuing engagement with efforts aimed at promoting the achievement of Africa’s Renaissance. The Thabo Mbeki Foundation is dedicated to the rebirth of Africa, in order to achieve the following:

•    Eradicating poverty and underdevelopment on our continent
•    Building relations of friendship and peaceful  cooperation among the peoples of Africa
•    Reaffirming the dignity of all Africans, including those in the Diaspora
•    Achieving progress on gender equality and upliftment of women and
•    Ensuring Africa takes her rightful place among the peoples of the world

In order to contribute to the achievement of these goals, the Thabo Mbeki Foundation will undertake a number of initiatives including:

•    Training and development of Africans to become active agents for the continent's renaissance;
•    Bringing together the African intelligentsia  and others to help develop the policies and programmes needed to achieve Africa’s renewal;
•    Engaging in initiatives to achieve peace and stability on the continent;
•    Working to increase Africa's outreach to the rest of the world thus to build an equitable and mutually beneficial partnership with other members of the international community;
•    Contribute research on policy options and appropriate programmes for accelerated women’s advancement
•    Continue to work in facilitating access to university education for South African students from poor families;
•    Contribute to the implementation of the continental policies adopted by the OAU and the AU.

 Purpose of Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI)

 The purpose of TMALI is to:

•    Contribute towards the ongoing process of the development of leadership on the continent
•    Contribute towards the resolution of the persistent problem of African under-development
•    Contribute towards (re)building African institutions in the areas of politics, commerce, trade, culture, investment, amongst others.
•    Contribute towards policy development on critical challenges facing the continent
